Seminar in Arts Activism Project Womens bodies are confused. On a daily basis, they are penetrated, ripped apart, on show, in your face, and completely accessible. And while womens bodies are poked, prodded, and titillated, women themselves arent given permission to live within and delight in their bodies. Its a weird, carnival-like, sadomasochistic tug of war, and women have no safe words to use when it starts to hurt in a terrible way. In this video installation, I have made a soft-core prayer, exploring the collision of trauma, guilt, pleasure, and the sensual body, and the perverse ambiguity that connects these themes. This prayer was made through an initial reflection on Filipino Catholic ritual. In this context, a particularly salient ritual for Filipino women is praying the Rosary, and reciting the Hail Mary. I was further struck by a poem by Filipino poet Jose Lacaba, which described the Virgin Mary as having been raped by God in her bed. This image unites the ecstasy of the Enunciation, the trauma of a violated body, the guilt in an act to which she gave no consent, and all housed within the sensual body as the site of collision. This small movie does not attempt to be some kind of homage or repudiation of the Virgin; rather, I invoke the Madonna Whore archetype to comment on the use of womens bodies as the battleground for a moral and yet exploitative economy.
